A Drop in the Ocean

A Drop in the Ocean’s purpose is to provide immediate and direct aid to refugees. This is done by coordinating volunteers to travel to our destinations in Greece. Aid workers assist with providing services and activities in the camps and in our community centres. The tasks are constantly changing, depending on the needs of the various destinations. We therefore encourage our volunteers to be flexible when it comes to tasks in field. At the destinations, we work with organizations such as UNHCR, IOM and DRC.

A Drop in the Ocean is currently present with volunteers on the island of Lesvos, Samos in the Athens region (in two various refugee camps) and in Northern Greece. We always need more volunteers over 25 years old for our destinations, and especially desirable are volunteers who may stay at least two weeks. We accept CVs and applications from people above the age of 23, provided they have relevant backgrounds. All applicants between 23 and 25 must be interviewed before they are allowed to volunteer with us. As a volunteer, you choose the destination you would like to work at.

At all our locations you will be greeted by a Coordinator who provides training and organizes our team of volunteers. Volunteers with A Drop in the Ocean travel at their own risk. You must pay for travel, food and lodging yourself.

Mobile Info Team

Mobile Info Team supports refugees and asylum seekers in Greece with vital information and assistance for the full duration of their asylum procedure. We fight for their right to know and to make informed decisions. We empower them by giving them an overview of their rights, obligations and options, preventing them from taking unnecessary risks and giving them the ability to act with dignity.

ShowerPower

The harrowing circumstances in camp Moria and the neighbouring Olive Grove were the motive to found ShowerPower. ShowerPower provides warm and clean showers in a cosy home environment.

It is a place where women and children can feel safe and can take a break from the horrific camp life. Hot tea, fresh fruit and soup are served and there is enough room for the children to play.

Since the start of the project in February 2018, more than 12000 women and children have had a hot shower.

Campfire Innovation

Officially constituted as a Greek NGO in November 2016, the ideology behind Campfire Innovation began formulating more than a year earlier, on the islands of Greece.

Campfire Innovation was inspired by humanitarian aid volunteers who, at the peak of the crisis, sat around campfires on the islands while waiting for boats of refugees to arrive.

Inspira

The Inspira Hostel is the realization of a dream that began in April 2008. Its main goal was to get a house that serves as a shelter for children with cancer that come from the interior of our Peru and need to be treated at INEN. Thus to offer them the opportunity to continue with their treatment and the possibility of a life expectancy.

In June 2011, the shelter received its first child. From there, the Inspira hostel has become a true oasis among such adversity.

Until December 2018, the hostel has received more than 900 families; its beds have been occupied more than 50 thousand times, it has served more than 250 thousand portions of healthy food. Inspira has been opening its doors for a year to also support children of the INSN of San Borja.

Inspira becomes a light between so much adversity. The main objective of the shelter is to promote the reduction of child mortality due to difficulties in staying and feeding in the capital.
