Kate Hudson and Gabrielle Union were honored at An Unforgettable Evening, an annual event that benefits the Women’s Cancer Research Fund, a program of the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. The gala raised over $1.5 million and featured a special musical performance by Miley Cyrus.

Women’s Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) Honorary Chairs Rita Wilson, Kate Capshaw and Steven Spielberg, along with WCRF co-founders Anne Douglas, Quinn Ezralow, Marion Laurie, Kelly Chapman Meyer, and Jamie Tisch welcomed guests to An Unforgettable Evening. The event returned to the Beverly Wilshire Hotel, with proceeds benefitting the Women’s Cancer Research Fund.

This year, actress, author, and entrepreneur Kate Hudson received the 2019 Courage Award for her support of breast cancer research, and commitment to raising awareness and funds for research.
“I want to just shout out to my parents who came out tonight. They’ve rarely come out so I’m so happy that they’re here. Thank you to the Women’s Cancer Research Fund for this tremendous honor, I’m so grateful. I want to thank all of you here for fighting the good fight as Gaby said as well, “You’re actually here and winning.” With the help of so many medical professionals who are leading us to the cures that we seek. There is so much passion in this room, and I really appreciate what you guys are doing now more than ever,” Hudson said on stage.
“I have to admit that writing this was one of the most challenging things I have done. So, writing this speech was challenging for me. It hits a huge emotional cord.  Like many of us in this room, I have lost people that I love to cancer and cancer makes me mad as hell. It has taken so many, too many lives. So it makes sense that most of the time we think of courage as the fight, rightfully so. Everyone in here we’re all in on that fight, we all want to win that fight. My grandma, breast cancer survivor, and she won that fight. I’ve several friends breast cancer survivors, ovarian cancer survivors and they beat it. They are heroes to me.

“I want to do what I can to ensure that my daughters generation and my sons will not have to suffer the way many of our friends and family have. I am very humbled by this and I am inspired to do as much as I can in part because of this night. Thank you and thank you to everyone doing all of the work, to work hard seeing an end to breast cancer. All the people at the BCRF, I love working with you and I will continue to. Thank you for all your collaborations that we do and thank you for this unforgettable honor. Thank you,” she concluded.
Actress, producer, author, and activist Gabrielle Union received the Unsung Hero Award for her charitable contributions and philanthropic efforts throughout her career, including her work to help educate women about breast cancer screenings, prevention and closing the gap on breast cancer disparities.
“Tonight I would like to accept this honor in the memory of my late great friend, Kristen Sofi Martinez who was a beautiful soul who lost her battle to metastatic breast cancer in 2010. She died from breast cancer but as I’ve always seen it, she died because of fear. Kristen experienced pain in her chest and her back for six months. But see she delayed seeing a doctor until it was too late. Oftentimes is when we like to prioritize everything and everyone before ourselves. But you know when you’re on the plane and they say make sure you put the oxygen on yourself before you help the next person. But I think all too often is when we don’t put the oxygen mask on ourself. And Kristen didn’t,” she revealed during her speech.

“She was afraid of what she might be facing so by the time the pain became unbearable, Kristen was facing stage four metastatic breast cancer. At that point I was moved out of fear I was going to lose my friend. We just wanted to save Kristen. We were deliriously ignorant. But I was proud to stand by her side and we became advocates and volunteers for this cause. But we never stopped wondering if maybe if Kristen had only faced her fear a little bit earlier and had all the information that all women need to know I still believe she’d be here with us today,” Union added.

“So I’m fighting this fight alongside all of you and all of the countless people who do this work without red carpets and pretty dresses who are shaping and changing and saving lives day in and day out. And when I visited Kristen they told us she had a few days to live and I flew out from LA to new York where she was living and so the last time I saw her I asked her, “What do you want me to say? What do you want me to do?” And she said, “Don’t let me die in vain.” She also said, “Don’t let them bury me without waxing my mustache.” She did say that as well. But I would promise her that I would carry on the work that we had done together and not stop until it is assured. So I want to thank you all for doing what you’re doing tonight to shed light and create hope and replace fear with something better so that women will know their family histories, be their own best advocates,” she said.
Rita Wilson presented both women with their awards and joked about not having “Kate Hudson babies.”
“Kate used to bicycle over to my house when she was 14 to can see if my son Colin Hanks was home . And Colin Hanks being a little too clueless to know like, oh, my God, this amazing girl is driving by on her bike, like, asking for me.[Sighs] No little Kate Hudson babies for me. Sorry Danny [Fujikawa]. Kind of Danny and Colin kind of look alike. Just wanna say that. Well frankly, if anybody’s going to trust that Kate Hudson is the biggest, amazing, most wonderful hearted beautiful person in the world, then I mean who doesn’t believe I’m Kate. Thankfully, I’ve never met such a misguided individual, except maybe my son Colin,” Wilson told the packed room.

Music superstar Miley Cyrus brought the crowd to their feet with her performance, singing her hits “Nothing Breaks Like A Heart” and “The Climb,” as well as covers of “My Generation” and “River.”

“One of my closest friends, a person I’ve been working with for the last eight years and my creative partner, started chemotherapy yesterday for breast cancer, and the fact that I’m here tonight it couldn’t be more serendipitous and I couldn’t be more proud to sing here again, representing people that we know and that we love. I’m here representing Dimond,” Cyrus said during her performance.

In between songs, the newlywed addressed the crowed and talked about her grandparents.
“This song is called “River” and actually, my grandfather passed away just about 10 years ago today from cancer. And so this song, I just want to sing for him tonight. Just about doesn’t really matter what kind of cancer you have. They all fucking suck and we’re over it. So you guys, again, I can’t thank you enough. And song is for my grand dad but for everyone out there that’s working so hard so no one else loses their loving grandparents.”
Additional guests in attendance included Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF) President & CEO Myra Biblowit, BCRF Researcher Dr. Peter Kuhn, Gala Co-Chairs NJ Falk, Tom Ford & Richard Buckley, Judy Glickman Lauder, and Kris Levine, Gala Committee Members Eric Buterbaugh, Stacy & Peter Cramer, Janet Crown & Steve Robinson, Laurie Feltheimer, Jennifer Smith Hale, Halle Hammond, Sydney Holland, Julie Jaffe, Danielle Lauder, Monique Lhuillier, Crystal Lourd, Tamara Mellon, OBE & Michael Ovitz, Heather Mnuchin, Candace Nelson, Alexandra Nourafchan, Danielle & Reinout Oerlemans, Erica Packer, Danica Perez, Kelly Styne, Alexandra Von Furstenberg Miller & Dax Miller, Lena Wald, Elizabeth Wiatt, Margo & Irwin Winkler, Special Guests Valorie Kondos Field, Erin Foster, Sara Foster, Danny Fujikawa, Goldie Hawn & Kurt Russell, Paris Hilton, Ken Jeong, Loni Love, Lori Loughlin, Jennifer Meyer, Jamie Mizrahi, Demi Moore, Katelyn Ohashi, Sean Penn, Alex Pettyfer, Sharon Stone, Justin Sylvester, and many more.

How King Cake Became a Mardi Gras Tradition

You can’t do Mardi Gras without having King Cake, which is the official food of the Carnival Season. So here’s everything to know about the holiday tradition.

By: Heather Newgen | Twitter: @hnvoluntourist

As colorful decorated floats make their way through the crowded streets of New Orleans during Mardi Gras you can be certain of a few things. You’ll collect a massive amount of cheap beads, you’ll have an unforgettable time and you’ll eat King Cake, which is a rich oval shaped doughy pastry stuffed with a variety of fillings such as cream cheese, fruit, cinnamon or chocolate. It’s then topped with festive icing in royal colors. Purple symbolizes justice, green signifies faith and gold is power.

But, that’s not all. Inside every cake is a small plastic baby. Whoever gets the slice with the baby will have good luck and prosperity. However, that person has to buy a King Cake for the next Mardi Gras social gathering.

FACTS ABOUT KING CAKE

–It’s believed France brought the King Cake tradition to New Orleans in 1870.

–According to some denominations of Christianity, the Wise Men met baby Jesus on January 6th, twelve days after Christmas. This significant event is known as the Twelfth Night and it leads into the Epiphany, commonly referred to as Three Kings’ Day. Many observe this as a holiday and celebrate the revelation of God incarnate as Jesus Christ.

–The Twelfth Night kicks off Mardi Gras and King Cake season. Throughout this time the city celebrates with parades, parties and other events.

–Mardi Gras, meaning fat Tuesday in French, is actually only one day, which is always the day before Ash Wednesday–a time of prayer, fasting and repentance.

–Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent, which lasts 40 days and ends on Easter. During this period, people who follow certain denominations of Christianity, will give up something during this time in honor of the 40-day fast Jesus experienced in the Judaean Desert. So Mardi Gras season begins in January and ends before Lent starts.

–Mardi Gras and King Cake season is for people to let loose and party in preparation for the good behavior they must display during Lent.

WHEN DO YOU EAT KING CAKE?

–Some bakeries in New Orleans begin selling as early as December, but King Cake is always available at the start of the season–January 6th until Fat Tuesday, which marks the end.

–If you aren’t in NOLA during this time, don’t worry. Several bakeries offer fast delivery anywhere in the United States.

WHERE DO I BUY A KING CAKE?

Manny Randazzo is one of the top spots to get King Cakes, but the line is around the corner during peak Mardi Gras times, so order early.

–However, New Orleans is filled with a number of delicious bakeries and restaurants who make the Mardi Gras pastry. You have plenty of options.

CAN I MAKE KING CAKE AT HOME?

–Yes! Here is Sucre’s award-winning recipe for inspiration this Mardi Gras season.

**THIS RECIPE MAKES 2 KING CAKES

Sprinkle with cinnamon sugar (1/2 cup sugar + 1tablespoon cinnamon)evenly. Roll each piece into a log and twist them together to form a braid. Shape into a ring sealing the ends well.

Proof to double in size and bake in preheated oven @360*F for 20-25 minutes or till golden brown on the bottom surface. If top is golden brown and bottom is still not baked, cover the top with foil and turn oven down to 325*F. Allow to cool before glazing.

Sir Elton John Raises $6.3 Million at Annual Oscar Party to Help Fight AIDS

Sir Elton John and David Furnish hosted their famous Oscar viewing party, raising millions for a good cause.

Sir Elton John knows how to throw a bash! His 27th annual Academy Award viewing party had no shortage of celebrities with deep pockets. The star-studded event took in over $6.3 million dollars. The money was donated to the Elton John Aids Foundation, which has helped the fight to end HIV/AIDS since 1992.

The Foundation has raised more than $406 million world-wide to challenge discrimination against people affected by the epidemic, prevent infections, provide treatment and services, and motivate governments to end AIDS. However, the “Rocket Man” singer says more needs to be done.

“We’ve come an awful long way obviously I mean 27 years ago we never thought we’d be here. We never thought we’d come so far in treating this disease, but we still have a long way to go,” he told reporters at the event.

“We have to get the medicine to the people who need it, we have to get the price of the medicines down, and more importantly as I say every year to you guys, we have to get rid of the stigma. But you know we’re slowly battling away and I’m still confident in a few years’ time, we’ll see the end of this,” he added.

Although there has been major success in fighting the disease, Furnish revealed new concerns about HIV/AIDS.

“It’s the alarming rise of new infections amongst the young that shouldn’t be happening because with the tools available today if you’re positive and you’re properly medicated, you don’t pass the virus onto someone else and if you’re at high risk, you can take (inaudible). But the trouble is, the stigma that Elton’s discussed, the lack of access to healthcare, lack of access to testing and treatment, you’re seeing a huge bump in new infections in young people.”

John continued, “The Especially in the rural south of America, in the Afro-American community. Young, gay black men are really a problem area here. And if it carries on at least one in two gay African Americans will be infected with this disease and we do not want to see that.”

Supporters of the cause and guests included Heidi Klum, Diana Ross, Kate Mara, Paris Hilton, Adriana Lima, Judith Light and Chase Crawford. Partygoers dined on a lavish meal prepared by Chef Wayne Elias and Crumble Catering who has handled Elton John’s Oscar party menu for 15 years.

“Elton’s team tastes my menu suggestions and make the decisions on what we serve,” enthused Elias. “Each year, we do a five-course, sit down, waiter-served menu. Last year we had Chicken Canneloni, Scallop Truffle Vegetable Consomme, Filet Mignon, Sea Bass, and Arugula Salad with Comte Cheese.”

“I treat every year with Elton like it’s my first year working with him. With such an important client and one of Hollywood’s biggest events of the year you can’t rest on your laurels,” he told The Voluntourist.

In addition to working with Elton John, Elias is on the Board for Project Angel Food, donating and helping many organizations in the LGBT Community such as The Center, Aid for AidsTrevor Project and GLAAD.

“I lost a partner to AIDS during the epidemic and have always said I would do anything to help end this disease that has affected our community,” he said. “So I can give back through my passion and business to all organizations in the LGBT Community.”

Even if you can’t attend Elton’s event, you can still order food from Elias’ restaurant, Rockwell Table & Stage!

The night ended with the Killers performing a long set and Taron Egerton singing ‘Tiny Dancer” with Sir Elton John himself.

How Lady Freethinker is Fighting the Asian Dog Meat Trade

The violent horrors of the Asian Dog Meat Trade is still taking place throughout several countries in Asia. Animal rights organizations are stepping in to help including Lady Freethinker. The nonprofit, which aims to end the suffering of animals and humans, launched a campaign to help stop this barbaric act.

Heather Newgen Profile PhotoBy: Heather Newgen | Twitter: @hnvoluntourist

Los Angeles-based animal rights organization Lady Freethinker launched an awareness campaign in South Korea and China urging citizens to keep dogs off their dinner plates and to treat them like family. The move continues LFT’s ongoing efforts to stop Asian dog meat trade.

The first set of ads was introduced on buses in Gimpo, South Korea late last year. This month ads began running in on China on Feb. 10 in the city of Shenyang’s Xita district stop — an area notorious for cruel dog meat restaurants.

Created in cooperation with Save Korean Dogs, LFT’s Korean ads have already reached thousands of people with messages translating to, “Dogs are not food but family,” and “Please do not eat me.”

Meanwhile, LFT’s Chinese bus stop ad – which began this week – depicts a loving family with a dog, with a message in Chinese reading, “Dogs are family, not food.”

BY THE NUMBERS

There are an estimated 17,000 dog meat farms throughout South Korea, with some two million dogs slaughtered for human consumption each year. It is the only country in the world with large, factory-style dog farms, where the animals are housed in filthy conditions without adequate food, water or veterinary care.

China has a booming black market for dog and cat meat, slaughtering approximately 10 million dogs and 4 million cats annually. Criminal gangs kidnap the dogs from their families or shoot them in the streets with poison darts, then cram in tiny cages and truck them — sometimes for days — with no food or water to restaurants and slaughterhouses.

In both China and Korea, many of the dogs are hung, torched alive, or electrocuted in the belief that torture will make the meat taste better or boost the virility of those who consume it.

The 2019 campaign follows last year’s crusade that included sponsoring a bus ad in Jeonju, South Korea, imploring people not to slaughter and eat dogs.

VICTORY IS POSSIBLE

With worldwide pressure from advocates such as LFT to stop the killings and consumption of dog meat, change is on the horizon. Last November, South Korea’s biggest slaughterhouse closed, adding to an ever-expanding list of meat farms and killing facilities that have gone out of business.

In addition to posting ads, LFT works directly with rescuers on the ground in China and South Korea, helping provide food, warmth and veterinary care for dogs and cats rescued from the meat trade. In 2018 alone, LFT supported the rescue of 24 dogs from China’s Yulin Dog Meat Festival and contributed to the care of hundreds more.

The organization continues to collect petitions to ban the Asian dog meat trade and will keep campaigning until the inhumane practice is a thing of the past.

How TreePeople Keeps LA Green and How You Can Help

TreePeople is an environmental non-profit based in Los Angeles, CA dedicated to planting and caring for trees, harvesting rainwater, and renewing the city’s depleted landscapes. With headquarters located in a park atop Mulholland Drive, the group has frequent volunteer activities across LA County.

By: Mario Rivas

The two most common volunteer opportunities are tree plantings and tree care. In each instance, groups ranging usually from 10-30 people get together and are guided by TreePeople staff to either plant new trees in designated areas–which can be in the surrounding hills, or in local neighborhoods–or care for existing vegetation and/or previously planted trees. (They also occasionally do restorations in areas affected by wildfires.)

Having volunteered with TreePeople for over 12 years, I like that it’s a very hands-on experience. LA can seem like nothing but a sprawl of buildings and freeways, so it’s fun to get out there and get your hands dirty–literally–and know you’re bringing back some much needed greenery to the city.

RELATED: Care2Travel Animal Care–A Great Venture

To sign up, first visit TreePeople’s website at www.treepeople.org/calendar where you can see what events they have. You MUST register through their website to attend one of their events. Plan on an early start (usually between 8-9AM) and leave time for driving, as some of the events can be on the outskirts of the city. Wear comfortable clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. I also recommend wearing waterproof shoes–if you have rubber boots, take them–as you’ll be around lots of water and mud (trees need lots of water).

You’ll also be handling shovels and other equipment, so consider the physical demands. Nothing that needs to be done is so strenuous that it cannot be done by an average adult, and with lots of volunteers around, it’s easy to share tasks, but it IS a physical endeavor. The volunteer outings usually last between 2-4 hours, depending on distance, how many people there are, and what needs to be done. TreePeople provides all the on-the-spot training and tools needed, and usually bring snacks and water, but consider packing your own, just in case. The staff is always friendly and helpful.

There are volunteer projects throughout LA so parking depends on where the volunteer assignment takes place. Same with bathrooms. There are no porta potties so be sure to ask if there are nearby public restrooms to use.

All in all, TreePeople is a wonderful way to give back while experiencing the outdoors, and it’s amazing to see the photos on their website illustrating how much impact the group has had across the city.

Workout Tips for Traveling with Fitness Expert Ali Cook Jackson

Whether you’re traveling for business or for fun, squeezing in your workouts can be challenging. But fitness expert Ali Cook Jackson shows us how to workout on the go!

By: Heather Newgen | Twitter: @hnvoluntourist

Think you don’t have time to workout while traveling? According to Ali Cook Jackson, founder, owner and head trainer of Philadelphia’s famous Never Give Up, you don’t need to hit the gym to stay up on your fitness while traveling.

Photo courtesy of Never Give Up

“What I often tell clients is that something is better than nothing. If you’re on vacation, on a business trip, or are simply on a gym hiatus, it’s not all or nothing. If you don’t have an hour to workout, make choices and embrace opportunities to squeeze in 5, 10 or 15 minutes of activity. These can and do make a difference,” Jackson tells The Voluntourist.

“So much of what we do with clients in both our award-winning boot camps and our personal training sessions uses nothing more than body weight. Those who are interested in starting a fitness routine or getting back in shape should keep in mind that it doesn’t take fancy equipment! At Never Give Up, we want to empower our clients to take their health into their own hands, wherever they are,” she added.

Jackson bases her incredible results on attainable, realistic goals and believes in a healthy work/life balance. She reveals the one item she always takes on a trip that helps her stay motivated.

“When members of my team or I travel, exercise is often integrated into adjusting to a new place or city. Take a morning walk and get your bearings. Instead of ordering room service for breakfast, take a jog and find a new coffee shop. Make the decision to pack sneakers – oftentimes this simple choice can impact how much activity travelers will get while on vacation.”

Another workout tip the Philadelphia based sponsored IRONMAN™ Triathlete and IRONMAN™ Certified Coach offers is this.

“If you’re staying at a hotel, ask the front desk if the hotel has any fitness classes. If not, ask the concierge for the names of the best local gyms. At Never Give Up, we offer visitors a free first class – perhaps you’ll discover something new while on the road.”

Not only is Jackson a fitness guru and inspiration to many trying to achieve their fitness goals, but she believes that giving back is an integral component of life as a business owner and organizes several events a year to benefit causes like the SPCA, the National Eating Disorders Association, and local schools.

Check out the video for Jackson’s workout tips for travelers and visit Never Give Up for weekly training workout videos to do at home.

Turkey Travel and Safety Tips for Women

While it is safe to travel to Turkey, women planning on visiting the country alone, or with another female traveler, should take certain precautions to ensure their safety.

By: Jenny Karakaya

There is no doubt that Turkey is one of the most alluring and exotic destinations on earth. Regardless of its continual political issues, it remains a hotspot for history geeks, culture cravers, foodies, architects and beach enthusiasts. From its bi-continent straddling Istanbul, to the mystical fairy chimney adorned Cappadocia, to the endless Grecian, Roman and Armenian ruins sprinkled throughout the country, to its dreamy southern beaches in Izmir and Antalya; one can go on months exploring this fascinating country. However, it is equally important to have your wits about you when traveling in Turkey, as it is in most countries.

Since Istanbul is my birth city, it is also a place I visit often, if not yearly. Having first-hand experience, it is wise to keep the following tips in mind, before traveling to and throughout Turkey.

RELATED: Sahara Desert trek–The Good, Bad and the Ugly

1. Don’t travel alone – buddy up with a fellow traveler or join a tour group, especially when you are exploring regions other than Istanbul. Even if you book a luxury resort in the south, do not leave your resort unless you are with someone else. There are human leeches everywhere and they love foreigners (yabanci as they say).

2. Get a sim card for your mobile phone to monitor where you are going when walking and in Taxis. It’s easy to get lost and cabbies are notorious for taking tourists on joyrides! It’s happened to me several times, even though I speak the language!

3. Be wary on public transport and keep your distance when standing in them. There are ample pick-pocketers and perverted men trying to rub up against girls/women. This is no joke.

RELATED: Egypt Travel and Safety Tips

4. Be wary when walking in crowds or crowded streets – always guard your body. There are some men that try to side swipe your breast with their elbow while passing you, to cop a feel. This is a horrific thing and it has happened to me, so I’ve resorted to walking with my arms folded across my chest in public crowds.

5. Remember that you are in a religious country. No matter how far along Istanbul has come as a European city, the majority of the population are strict Muslims and dress accordingly. Keeping that in mind, dress appropriately in public to avoid stares, shaking of heads and even loud cursing. Yep, that does happen.

6. Watch your belongings always and look out for pickpockets and gypsies asking for money in ALL public places.

RELATED: Jerusalem Travel and Safety Tips

7. Never accept an invite from strangers in Turkey – even handsome charmers. The men in Istanbul especially, are notorious for stalking tourist girls and we know how some of those situations ends. Most men there think that girls traveling alone or even two girls together are easy targets. They also believe that Westerners/tourists from modern countries are easier to pick up and probably more gullible. I have friends who have fallen for the charming, sweet talk. They know they won’t get away with that with the local girls. To put things into perspective, I was stalked once even with my parents by my side – yep, they don’t care and can be annoyingly relentless. There may be some cat-calling involved as well, but the best way to avoid this is by not making direct eye contact. They will make you feel incredibly uneasy by staring, so try your best, to avoid the stare. Locking eyes means a green light, which usually leads to stalking and waiting for the right time to approach. It may sound predator-like and creepy, and it is! If ignoring them and losing them doesn’t work, then ask someone for help – perhaps a shopkeeper, someone respectable looking on the street or call the police.

8. Don’t ever buy or accept drugs from anyone – and that goes for ANY country! Turkey has a major drug trade problem that poses a threat to public safety and national security. Drug trafficking is a serious issue for the country and anyone caught buying or selling will be sentenced to a hefty jail sentence.

**The Voluntourist doesn’t condone the use of illegal drugs.

9. Bargain and price compare when shopping in outdoor markets. It’s common knowledge that tourists get ripped off ALL the time even when they swear they are giving you the best deal. Walk away and see how quick they respond to your offer. Do keep in mind though, that tourism is a big source of income there, so also be fair when bargaining.

Keeping all this in mind, go on and enjoy the infinite museums and historical landmarks, devour all the delicious food and desserts they have to offer, indulge in a proper and well researched Turkish bath house, splash around in the sparkling turquoise seas, and take a hot air balloon ride to marvel over the ruins and magical landscapes. Just keep your radar on and research everything well. Safe travels – iyi yolculouklar!

Brazil Safety Tips: What to Know Before Going

One of the first things people ask about Brazil is if it’s safe. Most tourists have a trouble-free experience, but to alleviate any concerns here’s a few Brazil safety tips to follow.

It is said that Rio is one of the sexiest cities in the world and I concur whole-heartedly. Having traveled throughout Brazil a few years ago, I couldn’t wait to go back for seconds, especially Rio. The city is blessed with sexy curves (the natural mountainous kinds), stunning beaches, colorful Portuguese designs, eye-popping architecture, and a lush tropical rainforest. The people are friendly and welcoming (not to mention beautiful), their famous caipirinhas drinks are devilishly delicious, and the food delightful. Their energy is infectious and the samba dancing a must! I would highly recommend spending at least one week in Rio, to see the iconic landmarks, sights and beaches. Ipanema, Copacabana and Barra de Tijuca have some of the best beaches in Rio. There’s a reason, that so many have written songs about these places. It is also vital to visit the Sugarloaf mountain, the statue of Christ the Redeemer, which is perched atop the Corcovado mountain as the protector of Rio, the historical neighborhood of Santa Teresa and the famous colorful steps known as Escadaria Selaron in the bohemian district, Lapa.

If you have the budget, I highly recommend booking a helicopter tour. It is by far the BEST thing I have experienced in Rio. Tripadvisor has several tour companies for all the above, so my best advice is to do the research and see what fits best for you. However, every resourceful and famous city, has its good and bad side. Rio has a very high percentage of poverty, which keeps their crime rate steadily high. There are several favelas piled up the mountains, which are otherwise known as the slums or ghettos of Brazil. Where there is great poverty and crime. Unfortunately, this is mostly due to their notoriously corrupt government.

For now, it is highly recommended to continue taking precautions and following these Brazil safety tips while traveling in the country.

1 – Never be flashy. Dress like a modest local and wear nothing valuable, especially jewelry.

2 – Always carry a smaller purse or fanny pack. Strap it across your chest. There have been instances where purses have been grabbed or a strap cut off by bikers. So look for anti-theft bags where you can cut the straps off.

3 – Never use your phone openly or wave it around in crowds. If you are on a tour, then it’s usually safer to take pics with your phone, but not when alone. Same goes for professional cameras. If you are there for Carnival, never take your phone out of your pocket in crowds or better yet, leave it at home. There is pick-pocketing open grabbing everywhere.

4 – Never walk through a favela alone or with friends. There are designated tours for this, which are safe as long as the tour guide is a local from the favela you are touring. Be aware that there are armed police everywhere and they can open fire in a favela at any time, if they suspect criminal activity.

5 –  Avoid the beaches at night. Period. You will get mugged.

6 – Never get drunk and if you do go out drinking, stick with a trustworthy and reliable group of friends. The men are very forward in wanting to stop and kiss women in the street (especially during Carnival), so all women should have some male friends out with them, just in case. This is also considered a crime now, so you can report any aggressive behavior to a police officer, if necessary.

7 – The Favela drug dealers are always out at night looking to make a sale. Just say no.

8-Upon arrival book a taxi inside the airport from an agency. It will cost a little more, but this is a way to avoid the scam of a shady unregistered drivers robbing you, taking all your luggage and money. There have been reports of both the driver and passenger are held up, but the driver is in on it and takes his cut later.

9–Don’t wear headphones in public. Chances are you won’t be as aware of your surroundings and people around you if you’re listening to music and you open yourself up to a potential attack.

10–Always try to use an ATM located in a secure area such as a bank, airport or government building.

Don’t let any of these Brazil safety tips and guidelines scare you off or prevent you from visiting this mind-blowing place. Rio is worth the journey, as long as you are aware and prepared. Get your Saude (cheers)!

It’s officially Award Season in Los Angeles and the city is buzzing with excitement. Celebrities begin celebrating shortly after the New Year at parties thrown in their honor at LA’s swankiest locations. Famous faces are everywhere mingling, picking up free swag and enjoying the incredible events—which are always a good time! But, some like Gold Meets Golden are taking the opportunity to raise awareness for charitable causes.

Gold Meets Golden is an annual brunch, which brings together Hollywood’s elite with top athletes to celebrate sports and entertainment. As the longest continuous corporate partner of the Olympic Games, “Gold Meets Golden 6” was refreshed by The Coca-Cola Company, and produced and founded by CW3PR’s Charley Cullen Walters and Cinema Magazine’s Scott Orlin.

The concept for the daytime brunch, which was held at House on Sunset, began when athletes at the London 2012 Olympic Games were surprised by shout-outs from their favorite celebrities. The outcome was “Gold Meets Golden” – a chance for Gold Medalists and other athletes to engage with some of the entertainment industry’s award nominees, and realize how much they inspire one another.

With the recent announcement of the Games’ triumphant return to Los Angeles in 2028, Hollywood has been handed a fresh dose of Olympic Fever. While last year’s Gold Meets Golden celebrated the past, the 2019 event looked at the future by celebrating Youth in Sports. The 6th Annual event benefited Angel City Sports, a leading Paralympic organization in California.

A $50,000 check was also presented by “The Points Guy,” Brian Kelly, who surprised the crowd by doubling the donation on stage.

The charity was founded in June 2013 when Clayton and his son Ezra Frech were on the track at the Endeavor Games in Oklahoma City and asked the question, “Why do we need to come to tornado alley to run, jump, and throw things? Why aren’t there more programs in Southern California?” Shortly after, Angel City Sports was founded with a mission of creating sports opportunities for anyone with a physical disability.

Gold Meets Golden 6 also spotlighted The Foundation for Global Sports Development, a leader in the sports community that delivers and supports initiatives that promotes fair play, education, and the physical and developmental benefits of sports for youth around the world. Their division Sidewinder Films promotes this mission to a broader audience through groundbreaking film and documentaries.

The star-studded bash included Nicole Kidman and Nadia Comaneci who hosted the party. Jessica Chastain, Chrissy Metz, Matt Bomer, Topher Grace, Ocatavia Spencer, Amy Adams, Patricia Clarkson, Ryan Murphy, Billy Porter, Michelle Yeoh, Mark Ronson and Joe Alwyn were also on hand. Athletes, Olympians and Paralympians included, Michelle Kwan, Adam Rippon, Candace Cable, Carl Lewis, Connor Fields, Edwin Moses, Akuoma Omeoga, Ngozi Onwumere, Amy Purdy, Cassie Sharpe, Danell Leyva, David Boudia, John Naber, Jordan Burroughs, Jordyn Wieber, Katie Uhlaender, Mac Bohonnon, Madison Kocian, Alex & Maia Shibutani, Meryl Davis, Mirai Nagasu, Nasita Liukin, Rashad Jennings and Tatyana McFadden. Carrying a traditional torch for the event ignited by past performance of LA LA Land’s “City of Stars,” and Keala Settle’s “This is Me” from the Greatest Showman, which each won Golden Globe Awards for Best Original Song, this year’s Gold Meets Golden stage was occupied by Globe-nominated Billy Porter (FX’s POSE, Broadway’s Kinky Boots, who performed the Globe-nominated hit song “Shallow” from “A Star is Born.” The song won the Globe the next day, making this a “3 for 3” record for the event. The performance was introduced by Lady Gaga’s co-writer Mark Ronson, and featured a specialty new Gold-plated grand piano.

And of course there was an amazing gift bag, which was given to 200 guests upon exit. This year’s bag included Limited Edition Tokyo 2020 Pin Set, the Spencer Barnes LA “Gold Medal” Neck Wand already used by many party celebrity attendees, Golden HUE Awakening Mist, empower Bodycare products CBD topical relief oil and lotion, a Coca-Cola official Olympic bottle opener, , Appletinies organic apple pieces with chocolate, a Bulletproof golden-wrapped gift of Brain Octane Oil, Collagen Protein Bar and Sleep Mode Supplement, Sprinkles Cupcakes Specialty “Gold Meets Sprinkles” mini cupcake set, a J Vineyards & Winery cuvee 20 sparkling wine bottle, “The Points Guy” Golden Passport Holder and Luggage Tags, beats by Dre Studio3 wireless GOLD headphones, RITUALS’ Golden Dao Tea Set, a bottle of Oribe Cote d’Azur Golden Nourishing Hand Creme, and MyIntent’s “What’s Your Word” customizable gold medal bracelet and necklace.
