Fun New Orleans Tours to Take Around the City

Taking New Orleans tours is a wonderful way to enjoy the city and learn more about the area!

Heather Newgen Profile PhotoBy: Heather Newgen | Twitter: @hnvoluntourist

It’s easy to travel around New Orleans and fall in love with its vibrant, lively and friendly spirit. The locals are unique characters, there’s lots and lots of great food and you can walk down the street at any given time and hear the most beautiful jazz and blues music. There’s nothing in the world that you can remotely compare this city to and that’s just one of the many charming things about NOLA. And of course it’s rich in history, religion, has fun traditions and a distinct culture that includes Spanish, French and African influences.

Millions of tourists flock to the Big Easy every year to experience the craziness of Bourbon St. and hang out in the French Quarter, but if you really want to see the true magical essence of the city, take a tour. They’re interesting, informative, fun and you’ll have a new perspective of NOLA.

There are three New Orleans tours I highly recommend.

1. The Cemetery and Voodoo Tour with Historic New Orleans Tours

You’ll explore St. Louis Cemetery No. 1, which was established in 1789 and is NOLA’s most famous cemetery for a few reasons. It’s the final resting place of Voodoo priestess Maria Laveau, the movie Easy Rider shot its scandalous acid freak out scene there and Nick Cage bought a white pyramid-shaped tomb for himself and his family to be buried in.

Up until recently you could go to the cemetery for free on your own and stroll through the rows of above the ground tombs anytime, however, due to vandalism, you now need a licensed tour guide to be granted entrance. In addition, you can take photos, but no video.

Tours with Historic New Orleans Tours are $25 for adults, $18 for students and seniors and $7 for kids 7-12. 6 and under is free. Tours last two hours and take place rain or shine. And it’s not as creepy as you think!

2. The Haunted Tour with Historic New Orleans Tours

Ok so this one is actually a bit creepy, but it’s intriguing. As you walk around the French Quarter after dark, you’ll learn about the buildings that are haunted and the stories about ghosts who have been seen roaming about.

You’ll visit several locations and spend a few minutes at each one while your guide gives a chilling and accurate account of what happened at every place. After you hear the enthralling tales, you’ll realize why people say New Orleans is one of the most haunted cities in the U.S. If you like history and being a little scared while being entertained, this is the tour for you.

Tours with Historic New Orleans Tours are $25 for adults, $18 for students and seniors and $7 for kids 7-12. 6 and under is free. Tours last two hours and take place rain or shine.

3. Swamp Tour with Pearl Eco River Tours

Venture into the Honey Island Swamp where you’ll see alligators, pigs, snakes and learn about the beauty of the wilderness. Even if you usually don’t love being so close to nature, you’ll love this tour. Not only will you walk away with some knowledge of Louisiana’s natural environment, but you’ll have a better appreciation for the swamps. This is one not to miss! Prices vary depending on tours and transportation needs.

SoCal Fire Victims – Rosario Dawson and Lori Woodley Team up with Thrive Market

Rosario Dawson and Lori Woodley Team up with Thrive Market to Help SoCal Fire Victims

Multiple fires have raged throughout Southern California for days now, destroying 1,000 structures and killing one person. Thousands have been displaced and many have lost everything.
In light of what’s happened, local businesses like Thrive Market are coming together to support the community and families who have been impacted. The healthy online grocer has launched a fundraiser helpfirefamilies.org with UpToUs, a non-profit organization founded by Rosario Dawson, and All It Takes, a foundation founded by Lori Woodley.

“I have close friends who lost their home in the Thomas Fire, and this was an obvious way to help those affected,” Dawson told The Voluntourist.
Almost $64,000 has been raised so far and 100% of donations will fund direct aid for individuals and families affected by the Thomas Fire in Ventura County. Donations will fund bulk-food deliveries to Food Banks serving families displaced by the fire, $500 food grants to families who lost their homes and support to firefighters who have risked their lives to help their communities.
“Families have lost everything and we knew that by partnering with Thrive Market, we would be able to help some of those basic needs be taken care of. We’re grateful for all of the donations that have been made thus far but know there is still a lot to be done,” Dawson added.
In addition Thrive Market has donated $35K to Food Share

· The brand will also donate $50K to support local efforts:
o $35K to Food Share in Ventura County
o $15K worth of $500 grocery credits to assist local families in Ventura County

Exploring the world and seeing a new city for the first time never gets old, but getting to the destination isn’t quite as fun. For those shopping for travel-obsessed loved ones this holiday season The Voluntourist has compiled a list of items that will not only help enhance their journey and trip, but make you look good for buying such a creative, useful and thoughtful gift. It will fly for about three minutes before the battery runs out, but you can take plenty of pics in that amount of time. And you can recharge it pretty quickly.

The AirSelfie has impressive features like rather than using Bluetooth, the device creates its own local Wi-Fi network, you can a set delay timer (up to ten seconds), there’s a burst mode (up to ten shots), adjustable flight speeds, and you have the option of setting the angle low or high. This new gadget takes selfies to the next level.

Okay I know you’re probably wondering what this is since it’s not typically on holiday gift guides, and that’s why I love it. It’s an amazing unique gift for anyone traveling to Scotland or anywhere in the UK. The NTS USA are the American friends group of the National Trust for Scotland. In addition, membership to NTS USA has reciprocity with other organizations including the National Trust for England, Ireland and Wales and thus access to their 300 properties! Holiday Gift Ideas that Give Back While giving someone the perfect gift

Holiday Gift Ideas that Give Back While giving someone the perfect gift

While giving someone the perfect gift is rewarding, you can make it even more meaningful by purchasing items that give back to others in some way. Tis the season to give and you can help pay it forward while crossing someone off your holiday list with the following.

Chaser is a contemporary clothing line that is dedicated to the continual transformation of style and stands out with its unique vintage/rock look and good quality. The Voice Top 8 Contestant Davon Fleming Gets Candid about his Childhood and how he Gives Back

The Voice Top 8 Contestant Davon Fleming Gets Candid about his Childhood and how he Gives Back

Davon Fleming exudes confidence and personality every time he performs on The Voice as a top eight contestant on Jennifer Hudson’s team, but he wasn’t always so self-assured. The Baltimore native admits he didn’t feel so empowered when he was younger. However, after getting involved in the after school program Partners in Progress, which is now called Youth and Ambassadors, and making it onto the Emmy award winning singing competition, everything changed.

THE VOICE — “Live Top 10” Episode 1319B — Pictured: Dav Fleming — (Photo by: Tyler Golden/NBC)

“There’s a youth program that I started out with called Partners in Progress for troubled teens and younger kids—basically the kids that nobody wants whether they were abused, molested or kicked out of school. I’ve been with the youth program since I was in the 9th grade.”

The Voice Photo by: Davon Fleming

The Voice hopeful added, “I was living in the projects wanting to be a singer. I was considered taboo because I wasn’t out there selling drugs. A lot of times I was cool with these people, but I didn’t relate on that level, so I wanted to find people that were more like me or people that are hurting like me so we can all heal together.”

Fleming, refreshingly revealing, explained how the program specifically enhanced his life.

“It helped me feel accepted because I was among people who did what I did and loved what I loved to do. They understood that it’s okay to be different; it’s okay to be peculiar. You don’t have to be captain of the football team. I can be a geek. I can be in the thespian society and still be active and still make a change in my community. It’s a group of all ages from 12 to 18 taking a stand to be better and be something in life. I don’t have to be what they said I was going to be. I might have been kicked out or abused or raped, but I’m not going to let this one situation deter me of what my goals and dreams are,” he told The Voluntourist.

Now 26-years-old, Fleming is still involved with the organization and dedicates his time to Youth and Ambassadors.

“I started off being part of the program and then later on after I graduated I was a counselor for them. Most of these kids don’t have hope. When they leave those four walls they’re going back home to abuse. My thing is you never know what kids or anyone is going through when they have to go back home. I understand that by being a part of it and understanding that, it made me want to help them more,” he stated.

So he gives back every chance he gets by teaching kids what he knows best–music.

“A lot of times you can’t reach kids through academics, but sometimes if they have a passion for music or dance I can pull that out of you and let you know that you’ve succeeded in this particular thing. If you want to do music, dance, or whatever, you have to get an education, but first you’ve got to take your butt to school,” he said. .

While he’s been working hard showcasing his amazing talents on the The Voice, he’s also been working hard on himself.

THE VOICE — “Live Top 10” Episode 1319A — Pictured: Davon Fleming — (Photo by: Trae Patton/NBC)

“Before the show I was terrified of living. I was letting doubt and fear stop me from everything I wanted to do. But with this competition and this journey, I’ve learned to accept myself and say, ‘hey I deserve this.’ After the show I want to still continue to do music and give back to my community. I’m still going do the youth outreach program. Because I come from a rougher neighborhood I want to show others you don’t have to be a product of your environment. I literally live where the Freddie Gray riot was. I lived on that block and I saw everything and I’m still at this point. I’m not dead. So it’s possible for you too.”

Taking a road trip with your pet? Check out these tips!

Taking a road trip with your pet is always an unforgettable adventure. Our four-legged besties make traveling that much more rewarding, so here’s a few tips to ensure their well-being.

By: Heather Newgen | Twitter: @hnvoluntourist

1. Find pet friendly hotels on petswelcome.com or bringfido.com

2. Have a copy of your pet’s medical and vaccination records with you. It’s helpful to have in case there’s an emergency. Also, if you want to send them to doggy daycare for an afternoon, they will need your pet’s records, so research ahead and find a high rated one near your accommodations.

3. Research ahead of time to find the nearest emergency vet clinic. It’s important to know in case you need one right away.

4. I know it’s fun for our pets to roam about the vehicle freely on a road trip, but it can be dangerous if there’s an accident or you have to brake suddenly. Make sure cats are in a carrier secured with a seat belt. And there are safety harnesses for dogs that can be attached to seat belts. Or put them inside their crate.

5. Some animals don’t travel well, so talk to your vet about motion sickness medication if need be. And don’t feed your pet right before you leave. This should help cut down on car sickness.

6. Stop every couple of hours to let your pet around for a few minutes. It helps them not to feel too cramped or bored.

7. DO NOT ever leave your pet in the car in hot temperatures–not even for five minutes.

8. Make sure your pet’s tags with your contact information are up to date. Also make sure they’re microchipped before you hit the road. Tags can fall off and in case you’re ever separated from your dog, you want him/her to be chipped with your phone number and address.

9. Always have a muzzle. Your dog may be the sweetest, but if he/she gets out of the element they’re used to, they could become scared and aggressive.

10. Pack your dog’s favorite toy so they have some of the comforts of home.

11. Do a couple short road trips with your pet as a test run to help prepare them.

12. Download the American Red Cross Pet First Aid App before your road trip. They have great advice.

13. Get pet insurance if you’re dog doesn’t have a pre-existing condition. You’d rather be cautious. It can save you lots of money.

User Review: Habitat for Humanity China-Great Experience!

Habitat for Humanity China-Great Experience!

By: Samantha Shuman Pastor

My husband and I recently wrapped up a build with Habitat Global Village near Yangshuo in southern China, just outside of Guilin. I had never done a Habitat build before so wasn’t quite sure what to expect, but we were both ready to get our hands dirty and make a contribution! We had been traveling in China for six weeks, which had been an amazing adventure, but being immersed in this community was something we were really looking forward to and the experience was more than we could’ve hoped for.

We wanted to work with an organization we could trust, and Habitat for Humanity had a long history, great reputation and fantastic infrastructure so we felt confident in the organization. Getting involved was actually quite easy! We applied online and shortly thereafter set up a call with the group leader. He told us a little bit more about his experience leading trips in China and after a few minutes determined he would love to have us join the team. Hooray!

With Habitat builds, there is a fee of somewhere around $1800 per person but setting up a fundraising page is very simple and you’ll find that many friends and family are eager to donate which can help offset the cost. The money will go towards your accommodations, meals, local transport, cultural activities with approximately 60% going to the build itself. You’ll need to purchase your own flight.

Our Habitat for Humanity leader was fantastic – he would send regular updates about the trip, getting visas, and the family we’d be building with. He was also very quick to reply to any questions we had and connected us with other team members for those that wanted to try to travel together before or after the build. Logistics in terms of meeting up in Guilin for transport to Yangshuo were also very easy. We met other team members and checked into the hotel. I was very surprised by the lovely accommodations though I imagine they vary from city to city.

RELATED: Volunteering with Pride in London is an “Amazing Time!”

The next morning we met our Habitat for Humanity Chinese leader who gave a presentation about the family, Habitat’s history and most importantly – safety instructions! She explained we’d be outfitted with hard hats, gloves, and face masks but that we should look out for each other and said “don’t try to be Superman.” I really appreciated this and felt like we were in good hands.

We took a bus to the build site and spent five days working alongside local laborers and family members of the future resident, a 65 -year- old man who had suffered a stroke and was restricted to a wheelchair. He and his wife were currently living in a crumbling mud house on the property and we were working on providing them with a safe home with a solid roof, plumbing and a real kitchen.

The first day on the site, I was surprised that the walls of the house were already up! I think I assumed that we’d be building a house from scratch and would complete it in our time there. Not sure what I was thinking… this isn’t HGTV! Our role would be to build the brick walls for the septic tank & secure the roof.

I spent a lot of time laying bricks for the future septic tank (spreading cement is a lot Iike icing a cake!), while my husband used his muscle to hand mix cement, dig a trench, and secure roof infrastructure. We joined forces with other team members to hoist rebar onto the roof using a rope and pure strength, then tied pieces together with metal wire. We also moved piles of bricks and hoed in the Mandarin fields on the property. Volunteers ranged in age from 25 to 83 and bottom line is that there was something for everyone to do, no matter their strength or skill level. Our Chinese leader was there to translate with the handful of local laborers who were amazing. I couldn’t believe that they were working in flip flops but they really took us all under their wings and demonstrated what we needed to do, hopping in when needed for parts that required more attention or skill. I felt very confident that I was doing the work properly and that we were truly making great progress on the home.

That being said, I think our team of 21 volunteers was probably too big. We finished daily tasks quite quickly and sometimes ran out of things to do since we had used all the materials that had been delivered to the site that morning.

Aside from the build itself, I really enjoyed getting to know like-minded volunteers from around the US and Canada. We had all our meals together and many of us would hang out after dinner for a night cap. Again I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of what we were served — breakfast buffet at the hotel, family style lunch at a restaurant near the home, and family style dinners at a variety of restaurants in the vibrant area near our hotel. We also spent our final day together exploring some of the tourist attractions nearby which I think further connected us to the location and overall experience.

It was hot, there were bees, and the squat toilet was a 10 minute walk down the road. While we didn’t physically do as much as I expected we would, we felt like we were in good hands with Habitat for Humanity and that we made a significant contribution to the project. It was such a fulfilling and emotional experience (for us and for the future resident) so we are currently looking into where we can do another Global Village build again soon!

Corfu Donkey Rescue Gives Abandoned Donkeys a Second Chance

Corfu Donkey Rescue offers a wonderful volunteer program where people can actually make a positive impact by helping animals in need.

If you haven’t been to the beautiful Greek island of Corfu, you must add it to your list of places to see. Not only does it offer a perfect holiday getaway with its fab beaches, good food and relaxed vibes, but you have the chance to give back in a unique way–helping donkeys at the Corfu Donkey Rescue.

Heather Newgen volunteering at the Corfu Donkey Rescue

The Corfu Donkey Rescue takes in injured and abandoned donkeys who were abused, mistreated or just no longer wanted, which is a huge problem in Greece. Owners will work their donkeys, making them carry tourists and their luggage up hundreds of winding stairs multiple times a day in horrible conditions. Sadly, when they’re no longer able to work and make them money, they leave them somewhere to die alone.

When Judy Quinn, founder of Corfu Donkey Rescue, heard about the situation she moved from England to the island to start the sanctuary. It hasn’t been easy, but with the help of volunteers and donations, she’s been able to create a loving home for the animals where they live out their retirement in a happy, peaceful home.

Corfu Donkey Rescue

I spent a day talking with Judy, meeting the adorable donkeys and volunteering, which was hard but rewarding work.

This was one of my favorite volunteering trips and to help encourage others to give back at the Corfu Donkey Rescue, I documented my experience on camera so you can see what it would be like to volunteer here.

If you’re unable to donate two weeks of your time, which is required, no problem. You can visit for free and meet the donkeys.

I hope you’ll be inspired to at least visit the Corfu Donkey Rescue. It’s a wonderful organization.

Ian Somerhalder Hosts the 1st Annual Mardi Gras Mutts to Models Ball

Ian Somerhalder Hosts the 1st Annual Mardi Gras Mutts to Models Ball with Proceeds going to Charity

I cover and attend a lot of celebrity charitable events, and while I look forward to all of them, there’s one I’m really excited about because it involves dogs and Louisiana–two of my favorite things.

So get ready for cuteness overload as canines show off their best outfits down the runway for a good cause. The first-ever Mutts to Models ball is happening January 20th and Ian Somerhalder is hosting. The event will be held at the Fleur de Lis events center in Mandeville, near where the actor is from, and proceeds will benefit two organizations: the Ian Somerhalder Foundation, which empowers, educates and collaborates with people and organizations that have a positive impact on the planet and all its creatures; and Scott’s Wish, which provides aid for patients with leukemia and life-threatening illnesses.

The evening will start with a VIP cocktail reception followed by a show with celebrities, local philanthropists and media personalities walking the runway with their dogs. The runway event will be followed by an after-party.

General admission tickets are $125 in advance and details can be found at www.MuttsToModels.com.

So how did this amazing event come about? For 24 years, Louisiana’s famed “Mardi Paws” Parade has come at the tail end of Carnival season. This unique Mardi Gras parade designed for canine participants and their people takes place along the shores of Lake Pontchartrain in Mandeville, just across the causeway from New Orleans, on the Sunday after Fat Tuesday (that’s February 18, 2018). This season’s costumes will highlight “Fables, Fairy Tales & Nursery Rhymes.”

The event has become wildly popular, leaving folks begging for more Carnival season fun with a canine twist. At last the Mystic Krewe of Mardi Paws is fully embracing the social aspects of the season by hosting its first-ever Mardi Gras ball. The krewe is demonstrating that you can teach an old dog new tricks by introducing the Mutts to Models Ball.

There are still tickets ready for purchase, but they’re going fast so get yours at www.MuttstoModels.com. To plan ahead for the parade, please visit www.MardiPaws.com.
